How Much Space is Needed for a Drum Kit (With Examples)

Drum kits can take up a considerable amount of room so it’s important to know how much space you’ll need before purchasing on. In this article, I’ll discuss the different types and sizes of kit and how much space on average you’ll need to fit them in a room.

The Quick Answer

A standard 5-piece acoustic drum kit will usually take up approximately 75″ x 55″ (190 cm x 140 cm) of floor space. A standard-sized electronic drum kit typically requires approximately 50″ x 48″ (130 cm x 120 cm) of floor space on average.

It is best to have at least 5″ of space around the drum kit to avoid damaging the drum kit or the walls if the kit moves.

Space Needed for Acoustic Drum Kit

In this section we’ll address the space needed for different sized acoustic drum kits.

For simplicity it has been split up into the different number of pieces. Note that the pieces only refer to the number of drums and not the cymbals. For example, a 5-piece drum kit will usually have 5 drums and 3 cymbals so will actually contain 8 parts but this is not how they are referred to.

Keep in mind that the following dimensions listed below are averages. Please check the space required before buying a specific drum kit to ensure it will fit in the desired space comfortably.

3-Piece Drum Kit

Most 3-piece drum kits are designed for children and contain the following components:

  • Snare drum
  • Tom drum
  • Bass drum
  • One or Two Cymbals

The drums/ cymbals in a 3-piece drum kit will usually be slightly smaller compared to a kit with more pieces. For example, the bass drum will usually be around 16″ compared to a standard 20″ size and the cymbals are usually only around 10″ where they usually will be anywhere from 12″ to 22″.

Area (inches)45” x 40”

4-Piece Drum Kit

4-Piece drum kits are very popular because they contain full-size drums so are suitable for adults and teenagers, but do not contain too many pieces so are slightly better for smaller spaces.

4-piece drum kits contain the following components:

  • Snare drum
  • Rack tom
  • Floor tom
  • Bass drum
  • Hi-Hat Cymbal
  • Ride Cymbal
  • Crash Cymbal

5-Piece Drum Kit

5-Piece drum kits typically have an extra rack tom compared to 4-piece kits so take up slightly more width. Here’s what a 5-piece kit includes:

  • Snare drum
  • 2 x Rack tom
  • Floor tom
  • Bass drum
  • Hi-Hat Cymbal
  • Ride Cymbal
  • Crash Cymbal

Extended Drum Kits

Extended drum kits usually contain extra toms (floor or rack) and an extra crash cymbal at least. Some extended kits also contain an additional snare drum. These kits take up a lot of space.

Space Needed for Electronic Drum Kit

Electronic drum kits take up less space compared to acoustic drum kits due to their more compact design and smaller-sized drum and cymbal pads. Most electronic drum kits will fit into the corner of a mid-large sized bedroom.

Like with acoustic kits though, the size and space needed will vary depending on how many pieces it’s made up of.

Again, keep in mind that the following dimensions listed below are averages. Please check the space required before buying a specific drum kit to ensure it will fit in the desired space comfortably.
